Fadogia Agrestis: Definition, Benefits, Side Effects & more (2023)

Updated February, 13, 2023

Fadogia Agrestis is one of the most popular testosterone focused supplements on the internet today and is only getting more popular.

So what is this new supplement, does it work and what do you need to watch out for? Let’s find out:

What is Fadogia Agrestis

Fadogia agrestis is a plant that was traditionally used to treat erectile dysfunction. It’s often hailed from Nigeria, but can be found throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

It has long been used as an herbal treatment and is now becoming more and more popular as various health & fitness personalities have promoted it.

Fadogia Agrestis is also sometimes called

  • black aphrodisiac
  • bakin gagai
  • Rubiaceae

Benefits of Fadogia Agrestis

Some of the claimed benefits of fadogia agrestis include

    Improved sexual performance for men

Because the herb seems to stimulate the testes, this is expected to translate to improved sexual performance - specifically around erectile dysfunction - for men.

    Increased sex drive

Similar to above, by stimulating the testes and improving testosterone - studies have shown increased sex drive in rats and this seems to carryover to humans.

    Prolonged sexual performance

Fadogia is unique among aphrodisiacs as it seems to increase latency in ejaculation. Most herbs in this category do the opposite.

    Higher overall testosterone

While most of the studies have been done so far in rats, both anecdotal testing and some preliminary studies show that fadogia agrestis (along with tongkat ali) can significantly improve testosterone in men. Something many people consider to be a much better option than TRT or other more questionable supplements.

    Better muscle building and aesthetics

While not as well studies as the other claims - this would follow a similar mechanism of action and expected results as that of increasing testosterone.

There also seem to be some possibilities that this supplement may contain antiplasmodial properties and be helpful with preventing certain illnesses (although more study here is needed).

    Fadogia Agrestis as a Supplement

Fadogia Agrestis is typically taken as a supplement primarily to increase function of the sex organs.

While traditionally the supplement was used as an aphrodesiac, it’s become more popular lately as a pure testosterone booster - and while there is definitely more research needed - it does seem highly promising in that regard.

    How Does Fadogia Agrestis Work?

This works by increasing leutenizing hormone which can increase testosterone. It stimulates the testes to create more testosterone. This increases testosterone (without seemingly increasing estrogen).

This testosterone increase affects other important functions downstream from testosterone and is often used for low-t, sexual dysfunction, and other concerns - usually by middle aged men.

It also does not seem to down-regulate other LH over time - although you should carefully monitor this on your own by doing regular blood work.

What Are The Side Effects Of Fadogia Agrestis?

The side effect profiles of fadogia agrestis are not currently well known.

There are some studies that fadogia agrestis has a correlation with increased testical size. Considering this is the purported function of the herb - this is both not unexpected, but something to definitely be aware of.

There is a concern that there is an association with damaged cell membranes due to the supplement, but it’s not currently known how much of a concern this even should be.

What Should You Do Before Taking Fadogia Agrestis?

Like any supplement that interacts with your hormones, we recommend you take a full blood panel to see exactly where your body is when you decide to start taking anything.

This way, you can see the actual effects a product is having and then monitor and track that over time to measure progress and flag anything that looks out of place.

How Much Fadogia Agrestis To Take?

Optimal dosages of fadogia agrestis are still not known as there is more to study still, but there have been research done on specific ranges.

Estimated dosages are typically in the 100mg/kg of body weight per day. According to Examine.com, this leads to the following weight-based dosages

    1. 550-1,100mg for a 150lb person
    2. 700-1,450mg for a 200lb person
    3. 900-1,800mg for a 250lb person

For testosterone boosting purposes - the dose does seem to be dependent and dosed anywhere from 18mg to 100mg.

Andrew Huberman recommends taking about 425mg daily according to his podcast and said it raised his testosterone about 200 points.

You should consult your doctor before taking fadogia agrestis.

Tested and competitive athletes should likely avoid fadogia agrestis.
