NAD+ - Research, Benefits, Side Effects & Delivery Methods
NAD+ has blown up in popularity recently. It’s been incredibly popular in the longevity and health span space.
But what is it, why is it important and what’s the best way to take it? Let’s dive in.
What is NAD?+
NAD stands for Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.
It is a coenzyme found in all living cells that promotes cellular regeneration and vitality and is important for converting cellular energy.
NAD vs. NAD+ vs. NADh
NAD, NAD+ and NADH are all variations of the same enzyme.
NAD+ is the notation for the oxidized version. NADH is the abbreviation for the reduced form (h in this case stands for hydrogen).
Collectively, they are all usually referred to as NAD. In this article - we’ll refer to them all as NAD+.
Benefits of NAD+
NAD+ has become an important enzyme specifically related to longevity and vitality.
Primarily - NAD+ helps other molecules perform their best. Some of the primary benefits of NAD+ include
DNA repair
Regulation gene expression
Electron transport and cell signaling
Energy creation and healthy mitochondria maintenance
Improving immune function
NAD+ Delivery Mechanisms
There are several ways to get NAD+. Here are some of the most popular.
NAD Supplement
You can also supplement NAD+ through typical supplementation routes. These are relatively standard oral and topical routes.
Oral NAD+
Oral NAD+ supplementation typically takes the form of a capsule and resembles any other standard supplement you might take.
Recently - there have been forms of this that have come in a “stick pack” so they can mix into your water bottle or drink on the go.
The most popular of all of these is a brand call “Tru Niagin.”
NAD+ Oral Supplement Costs
NAD+ oral supplementation can run as much as $47 for a month’s worth of NAD+ supply (30 counts)
Topical NAD+
There are topical supplements that absorb the NAD+ precursors through eh skin. These are primarily done for skin, wrinkle, and cosmetic purposes and are usually in the forms of creams or lotions.
NAD+ Topical Supplement Costs
Because these come in cosmetic forms often - the costs on this vary dramatically based on the other ingredients and the brand. We have seen this as low as $38 for a cream and as high at $90+ depending on the source.
NAD Injection
NAD+ injections are shots given subcutaneously. These shots bypass the entire digestive process which oral supplementation routes trough.
This gets it into the blood stream much faster and can help you see the effects more efficiently.
NAD+ Injection Costs:
These costs may vary, but we have seen this online for $250/vial for 500mg (10-20 injections) and $425 for 1000mg (20-40 injections). This comes out to $12-$25 per injection depending on how you dose it. These include supplies are are administered at home.
NAD+ IV
An NAD+ IV - sometimes called an NAD+ infusion or NAD+ drip is maybe the most known and utilized version of NAD+ supplementation. It’s been used since the 60s and while it’s got a great track record, it also required a few hours to be administered, and can cause issues for people who have problems with needles.
That said - this is typically considered to be the “classic” NAD+ treatment.
NAD+ IV Costs
These costs vary depending on where you on in the country. A quick Google found us this near us ($225 for 250mg of NAD+). This These NAD+ IVs recommend you plan at least 45 minutes to an hour for the treatment (although don’t be surprised if it goes longer).
Side Effects of NAD+
- There have been no serious side effects reported from NAD+ supplementation.
- Like many supplements, digestive discomfort or naseaeu may be a side effect.
- Because it’s an anti-oxidant, your body can typically self-regulate if you’ve taken in more NAD+ than your body can process.
Reason to Avoid NAD+
- NAD+ is not regulated by the FDA, so there is some dispute on the perfect dosage to take.
- You have complicated medical situations you need to consult your doctor with.
- There’s some concern that theoretically - the increase in DNA repair that NAD+ can cause could increase cancer cell growth - but this does not seem to be backed by any studies.
Reasons To Consider NAD+ Supplementation
In addition to the general benefits we listed above, other reasons to consider general NAD+ supplementation include:
Addiction Recovery
NAD+ has been useful for people in recovery as it can help repair your brain and body to it’s status pre-addiction - since addiction can change how your brain and body work.
Brain Fog Elimination
Because NAD+ is a coenzyme that helps your body perform optimally, supplementing with NAD+ may help your brain perform better and help eliminate “brain fog” that might pop up from time to time
Overall Wellbeing Enhancement
This enhancement doesn’t just limit itself to your brain. By flooding your body with NDA+ - this extends the entire body and can help improve all cellular functions and overall mood.
